Title: Salesians of Don Bosco
Project URL: http://salesiansofdb.tripod.com
Category: Community Groups and Special Populations

I’m currently a sophomore-section two at the Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati and very excited about my participation in this event. I have exerted diligent effort to encourage my classmates to participate in this project but was not able to get favorable response. It is my school’s first time to join the 2nd Philippine Schools CyberFair Competition.. This didn’t deter me from participating in the contest and instead inspire me to exert my best effort. I’m therefore hoping for your kindness and understanding in this regard.

Classes and Teachers:

Mr. Eduardo Lagayan – Computer Department Head

My Adviser, Mr. Lagayan, who is the head of the Computer Technology Head of Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati gives me the encouragement and moral support which I considered most invaluable.

Project Overview

1. Description of “Our Community”

Our Community which we call the Educative Pastoral Community is located at the heart of the Makati Central Business District. The community is guided by the teachings of St. John Bosco, the founder of the institution. The community is composed by the different people in the school (Rector, Economer, Principals, Assistant-Principals, Department Heads, Non-Teaching Staff and Students). Likewise in our community we treat our Educators and schoolmates as family members. Our community is guided also by our Vision; “Servant-Leadership and Excellence through Technology with a Soul”.

2. Summary of our Project

The Web project would showcase the mission and vision of the community and the relentless pursuit of the ideals of St. John Don Bosco. These ideals came to life with the dedication and passion of the Salesian Community is an inspiring saga that’s making immense difference in our lives and monumental contribution to society.

The Project will highlight some of the most outstanding contributions of the Salesian Community in the Philippines for more than fifty years as well as their visions of the future. The Website intends to showcase the numerous achievements of the Community from many perspectives and their significance to the religious, social, cultural and educative life of our country in general and our community in particular.

The site will also feature the future directions and plans of the community as it responds to the fast changing society, continually build better Christian Communities and ultimately dedicated Christians.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using internet at home: Approximately 75% of the students have internet access at home.
B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom: We have no internet access in the classroom but in our Multiple Intelligences Center-Library we have approximately 45 Workstations with Internet that can be used for class research.
C. Connection Speed used in the classroom: Our computers at the Computer Technology Center and in the Multiple Intelligences Center together with the computers in the Technical and Academic Faculties our internet access is running at 1.1Mbps through Cable.
D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the internet: Approximately our school has been connected for about 3 Years.

4. Problems We had to overcome:

Well, the most problem that we have encountered is the low student participation. Well we know that the end of the school year is nearing so we students are trying to do our best to be promoted to the next year level; we are also making our school requirements so that our clearance is signed at the end of the school year.

Well I should do best on this competition, and these obstacles won’t block my path until I finished all the requirements needed for this competition.

5. Our Project Sound Bite:

My participation in the prestigious fair is an experience from which I can learn much invaluable knowledge not only for school but also in life. As a teenager, I am very excited about the prospects of the experience as I can share with others my insights and I can learn from them also.

6. How did your activities and research for this International Schools CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The project focus on the contributions of the Salesian Community and serves as an inspiring narrative that other organizations can emulate and appreciate. The Salesian Community runs our school. Don Bosco of Makati and this project could give us the perspectives about the mission and vision of the institution as well as it many contributions to the Philippine society and educational system. I lot about networking as a means of getting the information and other resources that would enable me to complete the project. I hope the this project would provide my school mates with the perspectives that could inspire them to Servant-Leaders. Being an aspiring Servant-Leader, I learn that we have to developed our talent to the fullest extent so that we may be able to use them to serve others most especially the underprivileged. The internet is a great tool for teaching and learning and must be combined with the best features of the traditional method so that we may be able to take advantage of both.

Project Elements

1. What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?
Well I used only a computer equipped with an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ Processor a large 80 Gigabyte hard drive, a good graphics card, a good keyboard and a good mouse. This setup helped me to work faster and meet the ergonomics of using the computer. I have a digital camera that helped me to take some snapshots of images these are used in this project. Microsoft Outlook 2002 helped me to manage my CyberFair Project. Macromedia Dreamweaver & Flash MX helped me to put the life of my project and last Ulead Photo Impact that I used for adding effects to the images. A book (The Arrival of the Salesians in the Philippines) and some magazines (The Salesian Bulletin) and a souvenir book of the Ginto 24k Play helped me a lot to put the content of this project. I located each tool through the years as I develop into a young web designer, for example the digital camera on my graduation. The most valuable of them all is the Computer and the camera, I couldn’t work without them. The developing technology in the field of computer development like processors helps us to work faster.

2. In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The CyberFair gives me the opportunity to be an "ambassador" both online and in person. As an "ambassador" online, it gives me great pleasure to be able to present the Salesian Community, featuring their mission and vision and how it animated and guided them to make immense contributions and momental achievements in educating the Filipino youth for the last fifty years.

As an "ambassador" in person, being a student at the Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati, I always subscribed and embraced the vision of our school which is "Technology with a Soul"

During the course of my work, I have personally talked to a lot of people to get information, insights, and suggestions. During those moments, I told them about the project and the CyberFair and realize the whole about what being an "ambassador" is really all about. It is not all about technology, it is all about people.

3. What has been the impact of your project on your community?

I ardently hope that this project could have significant impact on the community. I realize that the website may not have been up very long but it represents the first important steps utilizing the World Wide Web to let the people know about the very inspiring stories and contributions of the salesians in the Philippines. I sincerely believe that it is where its limitless potential lies as exemplififed by a wise Chinese saying, "that a long journey begins with the first steps".

4. How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The members of the community have contributed, in one way or the other, valuable information, insights and inspirations as I engage into a journey of discovery towards the completion of this project. I owe special thanks to Father Gaudencio Carandang, SDB and Father Remo Bati, SDB, Parish Priest and Assistant Parish Priest respectively of The National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians Parish, Parañaque City, for lending me important materials and references. I am indebted to Mr. Ed Lagayan, Head of the Don Bosco Computer Technology Center, Makati for his valuable advise and suggestions. Working with these people gives me immense pleasure and fullfillment.
